In 1995 the Association for Utah Community Health recognized the potential of hosting an AmeriCorps program devoted to increasing access to health care services. Placing AmeriCorps members in community health centers and other facilities dedicated to reducing barriers to health care has greatly increased the capacity of these organizations to serve their community. Since 1995, over 400 members have completed the AmeriCorps and the Medically Underserved in Utah program.
AmeriCorps and the Medically Underserved in Utah is funded by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and matching funds from our host sites and private foundations. As a program of the Association for Utah Community Health, AMUU continues to grow in its capacity to address the health care needs of Utah’s communities.
AmeriCorps and the Medically Underserved in Utah currently supports 24 members serving in 11 sites throughout the state of Utah. AmeriCorps members have contributed greatly to the improvement of health outcomes in the areas of immunization, diabetes, reproductive health, and have worked to reduce health disparities for special populations. The mission of AmeriCorps and the Medically Underserved in Utah (AMUU) is to reduce economic, geographic, cultural, and language barriers to health care and to expand primary care services for the medically underserved populations of Utah.
