Multicultural Breast Cancer Education Program

Empowering and Educating refugee and immigrant women about the fight against Breast Cancer!

Purpose

Communities United is pleased to offer the Multicultural Breast Cancer Education and Outreach program that aims to increase basic knowledge and awareness of breast cancer among the refugee and immigrant women of Utah.

Multicultural Breast Cancer Education Program (MBEC) is dedicated to providing information and support for anyone interested in breast health or breast cancer.

We are always looking to partner with various organizations and agencies that serve our refugee community so we can better outreach and educate refugee and immigrant women about the dangers of Breast Cancer, and the importance of early prevention and detection.

We are committed to providing MBC workshops as well as resources on reducing the risk of breast cancer and we can support individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer by offering case management and referrals to Breast Cancer services.

As part of our program we intend to outreach to 100ds of refugee and immigrant women here in Salt Lake County and surrounding areas, and we are always interested in participating in Community Events, Health and Wellness Fairs, Awareness Campaigns, Refugee meetings/Conferences etc.

Multicultural Breast Cancer Workshops:

All of our workshops are free to the community!

Our Breast Cancer workshops are designed to provide information about breast self-exam, early diagnosis of breast cancer and breast health issues and risks. These workshops focus primarily on refugee and immigrant women, between the ages of 18-70 years old, who reside in Salt Lake County and surrounding areas. The workshops are 1 hour long, and are presented in a relaxed format, to small groups of women, using breast models for demonstration purposes, and interpreting services based on the need (Participants do not have to disrobe). These services are offered to anyone concerned about their breast health and can be offered through groups, organizations or business programs via group seminars, Lunch and Learns, health and safety training or conferences and conventions.

Importance of MBC workshop to refugee/immigrant woman:

• Low awareness of breast cancer

• Low awareness and knowledge of treatment and survival rates

• Language barriers and lack of health literacy

• Little to no experience with preventive health care and regular screening practices

• Mistrust of the U.S. health system

MBC educational objective:

  • Promote Breast Cancer awareness, prevention and early detection of cancer through educational workshops/training
  • Provide assistance in connecting women with screening resources: cancer screening and mammograms; health referrals
  • Reduce breast cancer mortality rates/risks among multicultural women in Utah
  • Address concerns of refugees and immigrants in relation to the disease, and dismiss myths about Breast Cancer and treatment
  • Increase the access of underserved multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual women to breast cancer health education and basic facts about BC
  • Successfully link the services of various orgs./agencies/clinics to women in the community through a culturally sensitive outreach program.(Key to the program's success is the collaboration of agencies that serve the refugee/immigrant communities; community health educators, community churches, advanced practice nurses, public health program, and partnership with other health focused organizations i.e. American Cancer Society, Lutheran Social Services, American Tongan Society, Huntsman Cancer Institute etc)
  • Enable refugees to make choices that support or advance their health
  • Increase of screening behavior
  • Prevent future risk of the disease
  • Increase participation of women at Race for the Cure event

Lack of knowledge about breast cancer’s definition, cause, and early detection indicate an urgent need for outreach and education to refugee and immigrant women. Join us in our efforts to promote Breast Cancer awareness!
