“Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment is a
comprehensive and integrated approach to the delivery of
early intervention and treatment services through universal screening
for persons with substance use disorders and those at risk” (SAMHSA 2010).
SBIRT is an evidenced based model which has been proven effective in reducing
and preventing alcohol and drug use. Some of the benefits of SBIRT include:
Reduced health care costs (savings of $3.81 for every
$1.00 spent on screening and intervention)
Helping patients decrease their risk of becoming alcohol and drug dependent

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will learn:
1. The history of SBIRT
2. The core components of SBIRT
3. How to administer and score screening tools
4. How to train peers on SBIRT
