Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) has grown over its thirty-one years of operation into a network of eight health centers and eighteen rural contract sites located throughout the state. PPAU's mission is to provide quality affordable reproductive health care and reality-based sexuality education while guaranteeing both the right and access to services and information.

Sexuality in the Utah culture is seen as a political issue, obscuring the importance of family planning as an issue of public heath, medical service, and community education. Because of the unique atmosphere in Utah, PPAU faces an even finer balance when caring for patients than Planned Parenthood does on the national level.

Unique Characteristics
In addition to its main reproductive health clinics, PPAU administers expanded clinics in Park City, West Valley, and Salt Lake. The highly successful Teen Center in West Valley provides counseling and information on a walk-in basis.

Patient Care
PPAU is committed to providing affordable quality health care to women, men, and families of Utah's communities. Services are provided on an appointment or walk-in basis. Payment for services is on an ability-to-pay basis. Nearly 20,000 patients are treated each year in PPAU clinics, with almost 80% below the federal poverty level and most between the ages of 15 and 44. Volunteers are an integral part of all PPAU programs. The well-coordinated training and utilization of volunteers enhances the delivery of services.

Public Advocacy
PPAU has been active in organizing community education events such as the Utah Ethnic Women's Health Care Workshop; the Population Growth, Ethics and the Environment Conference; Utah Women's Health Trust; and the Utah Women 2000 Conference. PPAU is committed to ensuring that safe, effective, confidential family planning and reproductive health services are available and financially accessible.

Education Programs & Resources
Clear, complete information about sexuality is essential to making good life decisions. PPAU's sexuality education programs and libraries are resources for everyone in the community. PPAU reaches over 35,000 people annually with its outreach programs. PPAU designs and delivers programs that are tailored to the needs of today's families. Staff and volunteers teach classes in schools, churches, and community organizations statewide. The most popular classes PPAU offers are the Parent-Child Workshops, which provide a safe environment for parents and young people to learn about sexuality and to discuss their beliefs, experiences, and expectations.
