CHAMPS Region VIII Childhood Healthy Weight Workshop

CHAMPS is pleased to announce an upcoming distance learning event, CHAMPS Region VIII Childhood Healthy Weight Workshop.

Target Audience:  Region VIII Health center staff addressing childhood healthy weight promotion

Event Overview:  The Region VIII Childhood Healthy Weight Workshop was created as a collaboration between Community Health Association of Mountain/Plains States (CHAMPS), HRSA Region VIII Office of Regional Operations, each of the Region VIII State Primary Care Associations (AUCH, CCHN, CHAD, MPCA, WYPCA) and Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center (RMPHTC). This workshop, presented on a bi-directional video platform, will first feature didactic presentations and then allow for a collaborative discussion among participants.

Commander Tracy Branch, Senior Adviser for HRSA, will present an overview of childhood obesity prevention as a federal priority area. She will highlight some existing initiatives and present some ways rural areas have used unconventional collaborations to address these topics. In addition, the workshop will showcase two promising health center practices, one from Colorado and one from Utah.

Following the formal presentations, participants will be broken into smaller online “rooms” by state. Conversation in each room will be facilitated by a representative from each State Primary Care Association. When you register, you will be provided a link to connect to the workshop via computer or smartphone. Having your video turned on is preferable, though not required, to enhance our small group discussions. The purpose of this virtual workshop is to share information about childhood healthy weight initiatives and activities with Region VIII health centers and provide an opportunity for them to discuss state-specific efforts with their partners.

Learning Objectives:  Through participation in this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how childhood healthy weight fits into federal HRSA priorities
2. Identify promising practices that impact childhood healthy weight in Region VIII
3. Share information with state partners about opportunities to address childhood healthy weight in their communities
