Presented by: 

Laura Shane-McWhorter, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, CDE, FASCP, FAADE.

Laura is a Professor (Clinical) in the Department of Pharmacotherapy at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. She obtained a Master of Science at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) in Biology and Chemistry. After completing both her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Utah, she did an ASHP Residency in Geriatrics. She is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, is Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management and is a Certified Diabetes Educator. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and a Fellow of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). She has served as Chair of the Pharmacy Specialty Practice Group in AADE and has recently been elected to the AADE Board of Directors. She teaches pharmacy, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, and medical students and has received several teaching awards. She also serves as a preceptor to pharmacy students in a federally-qualified Community Health Center and interprofessional practice clinic, working with underserved patients to provide diabetes care and education. She served as the Remote Care Coordinator for aTelemonitoring Project Grant at different sites in Utah. This work is published in the diabetes literature. Her practice-related research is in the area of pharmacist-provided diabetes education and she has several publications addressing the role of pharmacists in diabetes care. She also has presented numerous times in the area of dietary supplements and has written the chapter on Biological Complementary Therapies in the AADE Desk Reference. She has authored three books published by the American Diabetes Association – one is a clinician guide and the other two are for patients. At home in Utah with her husband Jerry she enjoys her children and grandchildren and travelling throughout the Intermountain West.
